Who coined the term soundscape?
The term was popularized by Canadian composer R. Murray Schafer in the 1970s, through the World Soundscape Project. The idea was to listen to an environment with the same attention you give to music.
What are examples of a soundscape?
A beach (waves, wind, gulls), a forest (birds, leaves, a stream) and a city (traffic, bustle, a café). All three are in the mixer on this page.
What is the difference between an urban and a natural soundscape?
An urban soundscape is made mostly of human and machine sounds: traffic, construction, voices. A natural one has more sounds of nature and animals, and less constant background noise.
How do you make a soundscape?
Pick a place, list the sounds that exist there and set the volume of each one until it sounds like that place. The mixer on this page is a start; in the app you can build your own with more than 150 sounds.
